Informational Webinar & Media Availability Regarding U.S. Citizen and Lawyer Asim Ghafoor’s Unjust Detention by the U.A.E.
This event will discuss the American legal community’s response to the egregious conduct of the U.A.E., a foreign nation, detaining Asim Ghafoor — a United States citizen, civil rights attorney who represented slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and co-founder of the human rights organization Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) — by trying him in absentia with no notice of the charges against him, and denying him access to counsel, the opportunity to review the evidence, or present a defense. We will also discuss the implications for the American legal community and the Muslim community at large should Mr. Ghafoor continue to be detained contrary to the basic principles of due process and the rule of law.
